The Oklahoma Blood Institute Experience: 1989-2000
The Oklahoma Blood Institute (OBI) has a unique opportunity to describe the clinical spectrum of TTP-HUS because it performs all plasma exchange procedures for all hospitals in the central-western regions of Oklahoma. Since all adult patients who are suspected of having TTP-HUS are referred for plasma exchange, all are seen by the OBI. Complete records are available beginning January 1, 1989, providing for nearly 10 years of experience. As of May 22, 2000, 217 patients have been referred to the OBI for treatment of TTP-HUS.
At the urging of several of our patients, we have begun a series of group meetings at the OBI. There have been twelve meetings over the past four years, each with about 25 patients and 20 additional family members attending.
