Discussion: More than 80 types of HPV have been isolated, of which more than 40 types are known to infect the female genital tract. These are divided into low- and high-risk types based on the frequency of their association with invasive cancer. By definition, an HPV is low risk if it has never been isolated from a carcinoma, and high risk if it ever has been. Some examples of low- and high-risk HPVs are:
