Gynecologic Pathology- Pap Smear I

Question No. 2. The Answer is: (B) Loop electrosurgical excision procedure (LEEP).

Discussion: The guideline (American Society for Colposcopy and Cervical Pathology 2002) for management of women with atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance (ASC-US) are repeated cytology at 4-6 months, HPV DNA testing (preferred if liquid-based cytology or co-collection available), or colposcopy. Diagnostic excisional procedures such as the loop electrosurgical excision procedure (LEEP) should not routinely be used to treat women with ASC-US in the absence of biopsy-confirmed cervical intraepithelial neoplasm (CIN) in order to avoid over treatment.
