Gestational Trophoblastic Disease

Question No. 4. The Answer is: (D) Mild circumferential trophoblastic hyperplasia on the villous surface.

Discussion: Due to widespread application of untrasound in prenatal care, complete hydatidiform moles are nowadays diagnosed very early (1st trimester). Accordingly, the typical features of complete moles are not frequently encountered in routine pathology practice. Unlike second or third trimester molar pregnancies, early complete moles are often difficult to diagnose grossly due to the lack of classical gross features. The most characteristic histological finding in an early complete hydatidiform mole (CHD) is circumferential trophoblastic hyperplasia surrounding the villous surfaces.
