Gestational Trophoblastic Disease

Question No. 8. The Answer is: (C) Only 2 ane 4 are true.

Discussion: Fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) can be used to detect genetic aberrancies such as trisomies or triploid karyotype. It is not helpful in the differential diagnosis because both conditions may have chromosomal abnormalities. In the differential diagnosis between a mole and hydropic abortus, serum hCG levels and microscopic findings are likely to be the most helpful. Molar pregnancies are associated with greater serum levels of hCG than normal pregnancies. Partial moles are usually accompanied by fetal tissue, thus this finding fails to aid in the differential. Prominent cisterna is present in practically every villus in molar pregnancy. In hydropic abortus, prominent cisterna can be present but is uncommon among edematous villus.
