Central Nervous System- Basic Neuropathology

Question No. 20. The Answer is: (B)- Different isoforms can be phosphorylated to different levels.

Discussion: Neurofilament proteins are type III intermediate filaments and are the major cytoskeletal elements in neurons. The neurofilament triplets are encoded by three different genes that encode the low-, medium- and high-molecular weight neurofilament proteins. Different isoforms can be phosphorylated to different levels. In the beginning stage of neuronal development, nestin and vimentin are the first intermediate filaments to appear and they are subsequently replaced by neurofilament proteins.
