American trypanosomiasis (Chaga's disease)

Geographic distribution: Seen
in rural districts. Can be found North, Central, and South America, Java, and
India.
Age:
May be acute in children (especially under 1 year old), may be chronic in both
adult and children.
Pathogen:
Trypanosoma
cruzi.
Acute
form:
Cerebral
edema, congestion and petechial hemorrhage.
Multiple
foci of microglial and mononuclear cells without small cell reaction.
Leishmania forms of parasite are present within glial cells, or in the
center of granulomas.
Neurons
are relatively well preserved.
This
parasite has a strong tendency to involve muscle.
