Summary: Tourette
syndrome should not be viewed as a neurodevelopmental disorder because
significant developmental delay mental retardation is usually not present.
Clinical features include motor and vocal tics with onset before 18 years of
age; obsessive and compulsive behavior and attention deficits hyperkinetic
disorder (ADHD)
Genetics:
Probably hereditary but the genetic mechanism is
not clear
Clinical features: Presence of both motor and vocal tics with onset
before 18 years of age. The tics can be simple (involving one muscle group) or
complex (involving multiple muscle groups in a sequential movement). When the
tics involve the respiratory, laryngeal, oral and nasal muscles, vocal tics will
be resulted. Patients usually have obsessive and compulsive behaviors and
attention deficits hyperkinetic disorder (ADHD). The personality often has intense drive, enthusiastic interests, and
volatility of mood, which can be explosive and abrupt. Interestingly, some
genius like Samel Johnson (compiled the first great English dictionary) and
Peter the Great (Russian Tsar who started the modernization of Russia) were
belived to have Tourette syndrome.
