BACKGROUND AND CLINICAL INFORMATION:
Head
Pathogen: Herpes simiae virus.
Transmission:
After monkey bite, very rare.
Anatomic locations: Spinal cord or brain stem segment related to the site of a monkey bite.
Manifestation:
Transverse
myelitis, ascending myelitis and/or encephalitis.
Histology: Intense inflammation and parenchymal necrosis with petechial hemorrhages and neuronophagia in neurons and oligodendrocytes showing features of acute multifocal necrotizing encephalitis. Viral antigen can be demonstrated by immunohistochemistry.
